用法 ①

接続副詞：さもなければ・そうしないと（警告・条件）

命令文や助言の後に続き「その条件を満たさないと〜になる」と警告する

用法 ②

接続副詞：そうでなければ（仮定法・反事実）

前文の状況が反事実だったら、という仮定を含む。would have done と呼応

suggest / say / prove / think otherwise のように「正反対の事実・意見」を指す

① 警告・条件接続副詞／さもなければ・そうしないと

(1) Hurry up, otherwise you will miss the train. 急ぎなさい、さもないと電車に乗り遅れますよ。

(2) You should take an umbrella; otherwise, you might get soaked. 傘を持って行った方がいい。さもなければ、ずぶ濡れになるかもしれない。

(3) Keep the medicine in a cool place; otherwise it will lose its effectiveness. 薬は涼しい場所に保管しなさい。そうしないと効力を失ってしまう。

(4) Lower your voice, otherwise you will wake the baby. 声を低くしなさい。そうしないと赤ちゃんが目を覚ます。

ポイント：命令文・助言の後に置き「その条件を満たさないと悪い結果になる」と警告する用法。or / or else とほぼ同義。文頭には置かず、コンマまたはセミコロンの後に続く。
言い換え：Hurry up, or you will miss the train. / Hurry up, or else you will miss the train.

② 反事実・仮定法接続副詞／そうでなければ（would have done と呼応）

(5) I was very busy; otherwise, I would have helped you. とても忙しかった。そうでなければ、手伝っていただろう。

(6) I was busy that day; otherwise, I would have attended the meeting. その日は忙しかった。そうでなければ、会議に出席していただろう。

(7) She was exhausted; otherwise, she would have stayed longer. 彼女は疲れ果てていた。そうでなければ、もっと長くいただろう。

ポイント：前文で述べた実際の状況（過去の事実）を「そうでなければ」と否定し、帰結節に would have + 過去分詞（仮定法過去完了）を使う。If it had not been for … と言い換えられる。
言い換え：If I had not been so busy, I would have helped you.

③ 部分的例外副詞／その他の点では・それ以外は

(8) The essay has a few spelling errors, but it is otherwise well written. そのエッセイにはスペルミスがいくつかあるが、その他の点ではよく書けている。

(9) The hotel room was small but otherwise comfortable. ホテルの部屋は狭かったが、その他の点では快適だった。

(10) He was tired but otherwise in good health. 彼は疲れていたが、それ以外は健康だった。

(11) The plan is risky but otherwise sound. その計画はリスクがあるが、それ以外は堅実だ。

(12) The movie was a bit long, but otherwise it was enjoyable. 映画は少し長かったが、その点を除けば楽しめた。

ポイント：「一点だけ難があるが、残りの部分は問題ない」という評価を示す用法。but / except for that の後に置くのが典型。形容詞・副詞・形容詞句の前に置いて修飾する。
言い換え：… but in all other respects well written / … apart from that

④ 方法・様態副詞／別の方法で・それ以外のやり方で

(13) The law requires it to be done this way and not otherwise. 法律はそれをこの方法で行うことを要求しており、別の方法は認めていない。

(14) You may not act otherwise than as directed. 指示された以外の方法で行動してはならない。

(15) She could not have acted otherwise given the circumstances. その状況を考えれば、彼女はそれ以外の行動をとることはできなかっただろう。

(16) I cannot think of it otherwise than as a mistake. それを間違い以外の何ものとしても考えることができない。

(17) The result could not have been otherwise than disappointing. その結果は失望させるもの以外にはなりえなかった。

ポイント：「〜以外の方法・形では」という意味で、行動・判断・状態の限定を表す。フォーマルな文体に多い。cannot … otherwise than は「〜以外ありえない」という強い断定表現。
語形：not … otherwise / cannot act otherwise / otherwise than …

⑤ A or otherwise 照応副詞／前の語の反対概念を受ける（〜であれそうでなかれ）

(18) All students, able or otherwise, are welcome to join the club. 能力があるかどうかにかかわらず、すべての生徒がクラブへの参加を歓迎される。

(19) Any information, written or otherwise, will be kept confidential. 書面であるかどうかにかかわらず、いかなる情報も秘密に保たれる。

(20) Guests, invited or otherwise, must show identification at the door. 招待客かどうかにかかわらず、入口で身分証明書を提示しなければならない。

ポイント：形容詞 or otherwise の形で「〜であれそうでなかれ」という意味を作る定型表現。前に置かれた形容詞（able / written / invited）とその正反対の状態の両方を含む。法律文書・フォーマルな英文によく登場する。
構造：形容詞 or otherwise ＝ whether 形容詞 or not

⑥ 副詞が前文の内容を受ける用法副詞／そうではない・違うということ（前文の命題全体を指示）

(21) It was an otherwise ordinary day when everything changed. すべてが変わったその日は、それ以外は普通の日だった。

(22) His remark ruined what was an otherwise perfect evening. 彼の発言が、それ以外は完璧な夜を台無しにした。

(23) The rain was the only flaw in an otherwise flawless performance. 雨だけが、それ以外は申し分のない演奏における唯一の欠点だった。

(24) He seemed confident, but his trembling hands suggested otherwise. 彼は自信ありそうに見えたが、震える手がそうではないことを示していた。

(25) She claimed she was fine, but her pale face said otherwise. 彼女は大丈夫だと言ったが、青ざめた顔はそうではないと語っていた。

(26) Many believe the policy will succeed, but recent data proves otherwise. 多くの人がその政策は成功すると考えているが、最近のデータはそうではないことを証明している。

(27) I thought the meeting was cancelled, but she told me otherwise. 会議はキャンセルになったと思っていたが、彼女はそうではないと私に伝えてくれた。

(28) You may think otherwise, but I believe this is the right decision. あなたはそうは思わないかもしれないが、私はこれが正しい決断だと信じている。

(29) Unless otherwise noted, all prices include tax. 別段の注記がない限り、すべての価格は税込みです。

(30) Unless otherwise instructed, please submit your work by Friday. 別の指示がない限り、金曜日までに提出してください。

ポイント：(21)〜(23)は副詞が直後の形容詞を修飾して名詞句に組み込まれた形（an otherwise ordinary day）。意味は用法③「その他の点では」と同質で、名詞句内に埋め込まれた変形と見てよい。(24)〜(28)は suggest / say / prove / think などの動詞の後に置かれ、副詞が前文の命題全体を指示する用法（「そうではない〔ということ〕」）。これがこの用法の核心。(29)(30)の unless otherwise + 過去分詞（noted / instructed / stated / specified）は契約書・規則文書の定型表現で、「別段の〜がない限り」という独立した慣用的用法として押さえておくとよい。
