The trouble is that values even enter into deciding what count as facts—there is a big leap involved in moving from “raw data” to a judgement of fact. More important, one finds that the more complex and multi-levelled the history is, and the more important the issues it raises for today, the less it is possible to sustain a fact-value division.

It is possible to have a 12-year-old chess champion or mathematical or musical genius, but it is unimaginable that the world’s greatest expert on Socrates could be that age. The difficulty is not just one of the time to assimilate information; it is also the time to mature judgement and come to decisions which only ring true after complex studies and discussions with others and with oneself.

One day, I happened to pass through the town where I had spent my early childhood. Drawing on the scattered images left in my memory, I somehow managed to reach a place that seemed to be it, but I was not confident. The streets around me had changed completely. The houses standing there looked so new that I could hardly believe they had been there thirty years earlier.

There is a common saying that “computers never make mistakes,” but what this really means is that it is usually the human beings who operate them that make the mistakes. If the other party is a person, he or she might guess, “Oh, I see—you meant to do it this way but got it wrong,” but computers are rarely so understanding. Before suspecting the computer, you should suspect yourself first, and beginners in particular would do well to keep this firmly in mind.
