Nowadays we speak quite easily and naturally of the crisis through which our civilization is passing. Without questioning the assumption that we are in the midst of a crisis, I should like to ask whether this feeling of crisis is not something inseparable from human life in any historical period. The more closely we examine the past, the more we find that it, too, is uneasy with its own sense of historical crisis and urgency. Sometimes, in retrospect, these crises look illusory, for mankind has survived some of its worst apprehensions; and then we have to remind ourselves that these men and women of the past felt their crisis with the same intimate uneasiness with which we feel ours.

今日私たちは、自分たちの文明が今まさに通り抜けつつある危機について、ずいぶん気軽に、当たり前のことのように語る。私たちが本当に危機のさなかにいるという前提そのものは疑わないでおくとしても、こうした危機感は、歴史上いつの時代の人間の暮らしにもつきまとうものではなかったか、と私は問いかけてみたい。過去を詳しく調べれば調べるほど、どの時代もそれぞれ独自の歴史的危機感や切迫感を抱えて落ち着かない思いをしていたことが見えてくる。後から振り返れば、そうした危機は思い過ごしにすぎなかったように見えることもある。人類はこれまで、最悪の不安の多くを実際には乗り越えてきたからだ。しかし同時に私たちは、過去に生きた人々もまた、今の私たちが自分たちの危機に対して抱くのとまったく同じ切実な不安をもって、彼ら自身の危機を感じ取っていたのだ、という事実を思い出さなくてはならない。

With the passing of time, the arts have become so inextricably woven into our daily lives that we tend to take them for granted and ignore the central place that they have always occupied in the human being.

長い年月が経つうちに、芸術というものは私たちの日々の暮らしのなかに、もはや解きほぐせないほど深く編み込まれてしまった。そのせいで私たちは、芸術の存在をあって当たり前のものとみなし、それが人間の心の中でずっと中心的な位置を占め続けてきたという事実そのものを、見過ごしがちになっている。

自分を知るというくらいやさしいようでむずかしいことはない。しじゅう鏡の前に立つことが，自分を知ることではない。しじゅう鏡の前に立っても，いつまでも自分を知らない人がいる。鏡の前に立つ気持そのものが，かえって自分を知ることを妨げている場合がある。


Knowing oneself looks easy at first glance, yet nothing could be harder. Standing in front of a mirror all the time is not the same thing as knowing oneself.
